Until he started acting on the silver screen, Soumitra Chatterjee worked as an insurance agent for a life insurance company. His employment ended after a year of unsuccessful work. In that year, he could only insure his brother. Soumitra, who played memorable characters in famous films of famous
Director throughout his life, and towards the final stage of his career, he won the National award for the best acting award for the debut film by a young director and that, naturally, led to a special relationship and bonding between the actor and the director. After Soumitra's departure, the fascinated director paid tribute to him with a well-planned book. The publication of this book sets a new example, when values such as respect and devotion are being labelled an old-fashioned habit. There are many books about directors, but it is difficult to find an example of a director writing a book about an actor.
This book contains several interviews, snippets of experiences and ten films of Soumitra through the eyes of director Suman Ghosh. The discussion of these ten pictures is the strongest part of the book. The essay rejects the prediction that their bonding will affect the director's interpretations. After reading this chapter, it can be easily said that the intimacy and warmth of their relationship never interfered with the explanation of acting by Suman Ghosh. The director is free from all inclination and rational about Soumitra in all these ten films. The introduction by Shantanu Roy Chowdhury is also rich in depth of analysis.
The most exciting and emotional part of the book is when Soumitra spends the night with Suman Ghosh on the day he receives the National Award. Sumon has written little, but what he has written reveals a lot about their relationship, such as how deep it is.
There is only one complaint - the strange shape of the book, as well as the fifteen cm wide text area and italics, are painful for the eyes.
